Creating Approxidillo
Normally we'd start our duel with walkarounds, but today we have a problem: no arena! I didn't have time to make up a 1.5x Armadillo mall. Rather than play at 1x, we moved to our best tool for making quick arenas: masking tape.
Approximately Armadillo

Simplifying the arena down to a Y-shape and the grandstands let us quickly lay out the arena on the three tables provided by the Source. As we had 8 players, we placed two gates on the side with the grandstands (this side usually only has one gate).

With that settled, we moved on to walkarounds.

After a quick round of dicing off and placing vehicles, we were ready to get underway!

The arena quickly divided up into two groups: four in the larger open area (Chris, Jim, Pete, Mike) and four in the Alley of Death (Brian, Renee, Odie, Becky). In the large area, Pete put his minedroppers on automatic while Jim shot at Pete with his HESH RRs, Chris shot at Jim with an APFSDS equipped ATG, and Mike shot at Jim at long range with twin Incendiary VMGs. On the other side, Renee employed her twin Blast Cannons against Odie. She quickly found herself sandwiched between Odie's three RLs and Brian's three HESH RRs, while Becky shot Odie with her single RR.

This'll Be Over Quick

Odie's second shot blew through Renee's front armor, knocking her driver unconscious and sending her into a skid. Her car proceeded to start on fire and burn to a crisp. (Ouch!) Odie now became the monkey-in-the-middle.

Busdropper

On the other side, Mike turned to avoid Pete's line of mines. Unable to bring his primary weapons to bear, the blow-through concealment came off and revealed the dreaded BUSDROPPER! This disrupted play for a couple minutes while everyone laughed and started suggesting enhancements for the Busdropper, like the dreaded TDX Bus. (Wouldn't want to meet one of those in a dark alley!)

(Editor's Note: I couldn't resist throwing together something for the busdropper. Enjoy.)

Busdropper (BD) - (x)
Cost $1500, Weight 100, Spc: 2, Shots: 1, Ammo Cost: $50+payload, Ammo Weight: 10+payload, Effect: Dropped Solid. Creates a 40' bus counter facing in any direction the firer wishes. This is actually a bus-shaped balloon which can be filled with either 1 shot of HD dropped liquid or gas or four shots of any dropped solid or non-HD liquid or gas. The balloon has 2 non-vehicular DP, accel 5, TS 25. It accelerates at the start of each turn after being dropped and moves in a straight line until it hits a solid object (automatically popped) or is popped by weapons fire. When popped, replace the bus counter with the dropped weapon counter(s), centered on the former bus. (Four counters are placed to fit like an HD counter; solids are centered on the four corners of the bus.) Busdroppers and their baloons may be Radio Detonated for the same cost as mines; the dropper may also control radio-detonated mine playloads. AADA restricted.
Armored Busdropper (ABD) - (x)
Cost $2000, Weight 150, Spc: 3, Shots: 1, Ammo Cost: $75+payload+armor, Ammo Weight: 15+payload+armor, Effect: Dropped Solid. The same as the Busdropper, but the balloon has thin armor plating applied to it. Armor costs, weighs, and has the total point restrictions of Component Armor for a 5 space item but only protects on a 1-3 on 1d. AADA restricted.
Improved Busdropper (IBD) - (S*)
Cost $20000, Weight 250, Spc: 3, Shots: 1, Ammo Cost: as designed, Ammo Weight: bus/100, Effect: Dropped Solid. The Improved Busdropper drops a super-compressed bus out of an extra-dimensional space! Place an obstacle counter behind the dropping vehicle. One phase later, the obstacle expands into the stored bus, facing in any direction at 0 MPH. Vehicles touching the bus counter as it expands are destroyed; drop the appropriate confetti. This causes no damage to the bus.

Improved Busdroppers are loaded by bringing a bus to the weapon and pressing the Store button on the device. Stored crew without additional air may survive inside the Improved Busdropper for 1 hour + 10 minutes per point of Meditation skill.

Trying to place a bus with a Black Hole Dropper inside an Improved Busdropper causes both vehicles to explode. Trying to place a bus with an Improved Busdropper inside an Improved Busdropper tears a hole in extra-dimensional space: both buses and everything within a 10 cl radius is sucked inside, never to be seen again.

May not use magazines. Uncle Schmal's item.

Soap Bubble Ammo
Kids love it! Replaces Paint in any Paint using weapon. Cost and weight are half of normal paint; firing it creates a cloud of soap bubbles that have the in-air effects of paint but do not cause your vehicle to be painted. Counter is destroyed by any amount of damage, by a vehicle passing through the counter, or if a damaging shot through the counter hits its intended target. Damaging lasers fired through bubbles do half damage, and the counter will disrupt laser-guided weaponry for the shot that removes the counter. X-Ray lasers ignore bubbles; targeting lasers do not destroy the counter. -1 Prestige for any combat in which this ammunition is fired.
Chris and the Flame Clouds

A minute or two later the Bus was picked up and play resumed. Mike and Jim continue to trade fire, then sideswipe dodging Pete's mines. Mike reveals his true dropped weapon, a Flame Cloud Gas Streamer, but Jim was able to dodge around it. Mike and Chris got together as well, and Mike used his other FCGS shot.

CRUNCH!

Back in the Alley of Death, Odie and Brian were getting ready for a meeting. At the end of Turn 3, Odie blew a control roll and was spinning right into Brian's front. Odie died from the front to side head-on, while Bran's front and weapons were tore up. Becky sees this and swoops in after them, but Brian turns and starts dumping out flame clouds all over the place. Becky heads through and needs to take a turn to turn around.

Enter Pete, who had been working his way up there since finishing off his line of mines. Brian now has two threats to worry about; he chooses to turn towards Pete at the last second. Sadly, Brian misses his control roll and rolls straight into the mall. The resulting head-on with his top is plenty enough to take Brian out.

There Goes Becky

Pete switches targets to Becky. As they close, Pete lets loose his Ice Discharger. Becky hits it, causing her to fishtail into Brian's flame cloud. Amazingly, she survives that hazard, but is forced to either maneuver on the ice or go straight into another flame cloud. She chooses the flame cloud as the lesser hazard, but unfortunately it's still enough to send her rolling into the wall. Being upside down with only a turret weapon is bad news, making her a complete kill for Brian.

Mike reaches the corner and escapes (for a bit at least) Jim's threat. Now he has to worry about Pete, who has come down from the Alley of Death and is looking to get an actual kill. They trade shots and Jim also takes a shot when he comes around the corner. Mike turns into the Alley of Death with Jim in persuit and Chris coming up the other way.

The Massive Head-On

Mike takes the beating while keeping his breached right side protected. Chris and Jim both take shots at him without taking him out. Chris takes a look at Jim's damaged front and his massive amount of front armor and thinks he can take Jim out, so he lines up for the head-on!

25 Dice

Adding up their speeds gives 150, or 25d of damage! Chris rolls up almost perfectly what he needed: 83 points. This is enough to destroy Jim's vehicle but doesn't kill the driver, while Chris' front armor is breached without any points going internal. Chris gets his first circuit kill for 2054, and it's the points leader to boot!

The Alley of Death

Not out of it yet, Chris pivots to chase after Mike. Mike takes the shot, and hits Chris' ATG and gas engine with his Incendiary VMG. With no weapons and a fire-damaged gas engine, Chris surrenders. The Alley of Death has claimed its sixth and final victim.

It's turn 15, the duel's half over, and we're down to Mike and Pete. Mike uses what maneuverability he has to his advantage, taking Trons (D6 bends) as Pete approaches and scraping walls to keep Pete away from his breached side. At one point, Mike even offered Pete the chance to T-Bone him, hoping that Pete didn't have enough front armor remaining to survive (Pete was staying at around 90 MPH, Mike at 60). Pete declined the ram and turned the other way to avoid the wall, giving Mike another reprieve.

T29P1: The End

While valiant, this effort could not extend the duel long enough. Pete's maneuverability and speed let him pick and choose his shots, and in T29P1 Pete rear-ended Mike (destroying his gas tank for the first time). The follow-up point blank rocket shot destroyed the gas tank and almost breached the Driver's CA. With almost no chance to avoid a shot in turn 30 that would take out his driver, Mike surrendered as a mobility kill. This duel started around 2:30 PM and ran until a little after 9 PM, making it one of the longest in recent memory.

Congratulations to Pete Jansen on his first win in 2054!
